The Great War cruises to the win in the 96ROCK Stakes.

The Great War Has More in Store After Romp

Prohibitive favorite The Great War appears to have bigger battles ahead after winning for fun in his 3-year-old debut Jan. 31 in the $75,000 96ROCK Stakes under the lights at Turfway Park (VIDEO).

Lapped on pacesetter Serious Talk into the turn of the 6 1/2-furlong Polytrack test, The Great War took command at the quarter pole and steadily pulled away under jockey Albin Jimenez. He won at 1-10 odds in a field of 11 sophomores while geared down by 7 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:18.69.

Formerly in the yard of Irish training great Aidan O'Brien, the promising bay colt was making his initial start for trainer Wesley Ward, who conditions the son of War Front   for Joseph Allen, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith.

A minor stakes winner at the Curragh last fall, The Great War got his first taste of American racing in the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) in his prior start, finishing fourth, 8 1/4 lengths behind runaway winner Texas Red, Carpe Diem, and Upstart. He concentrated on racing in turf sprints in England and Ireland as a 2-year-old, winning three of seven starts before testing dirt in the BC Juvenile.

Bred in Kentucky by Claiborne Farm from the winning Pulpit mare Guide, The Great War was purchased for $1 million from Claiborne's consignment at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale by Michael V. Magnier. He is the seventh starter produced by his dam and her first black-type winner.

Serious Talk, ridden by Rodney Prescott, made the early pace with The Great War just off his outside, as they made their way down the backstretch in :23.04 for the opening quarter mile. The Great War always looked like a winner, however, taking the lead as they reached the half-mile point in :46.38 and pulling away as he pleased through the lane before being ridden out in the final sixteenth.

Two Step Temper was a clear second by seven lengths with John McKee aboard, and Serious Talk held third over Ekati Told Me.

The Great War upped his earnings to $248,873 with his fourth win nine starts, paying $2.20, $2.10, and $2.10 as the 122-pound highweight. Two Step Temper returned $5 and $3.60, and Serious Talk was $2.60 to show.

The 96ROCK is the first of two local steppingstones to the $550,000 Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral Stakes March 21. The other is the $125,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes Feb. 28.

The Great War Storms Home at Turfway:

Sent off as a 1-10 shot for his debut for Wesley Ward at Turfway Park last night, The Great War (War Front x Guide) couldn't have been any more impressive, scoring by six lengths. A winner of three out of his career eight starts to date, including the Listed Blenheim Stakes at the Curragh last season, the $1m Keenland yearling sale graduate was given his big chance to shine at the end of the season by former trainer Aidan O'Brien in the Juvenile Turf at the Breeders Cup, where he finished a very good fourth behind top class rivals Texas Red, Carpe Diem & Upstart. Away from the stalls without any fuss whatsoever, The Great War was always prominent in the field, sitting out wide for most of the way under Albin Jimenez, and when asked for his effort two and a half furlongs out, he soon stretched three and then six lengths clear, clocking a respectable time of 1:18.69 and putting his face firmly in the Triple Crown picture.

O'Brien sets five on
US Triple Crown trail

USA: Racing Post Trophy runner-up Aloft features among five nominations from Ireland's champion trainer Aidan O'Brien for this year's US Triple Crown.

O'Brien has a predictably strong squad for the British and Irish Classics this term, but success Stateside would be a notable achievement on his impressive CV and he has five of the 429 early entries for the Triple Crown, which has not been won since 1978 when Affirmed triumphed.

Aloft, second to Elm Park in the Doncaster Group 1 in October, is joined by Battle Of Marathon, War Envoy, Smuggler's Cove and Royal Navy Ship. Breeders' Cup Juvenile fourth The Great War has joined Wesley Ward from O'Brien and made a winning start to his US career on Saturday.

Nominations for the Triple Crown are up 15 from last year and are the most since 2008 when 460 horses were engaged. They also include four possibles from the yard of Dermot Weld, who saddled Go And Go to bag the third leg in the 1990 Belmont Stakes.

He is represented by Don Camillo, Sight Hound, Time To Inspire and Tombelaine, while John Oxx has an unnamed colt out of Kamarinskaya entered.

Godolphin's challengers include Tempus Temporis (trained by John Gosden) and Maftool (Saeed Bin Suroor).

Todd Pletcher has 34 of the entries - the most of any trainer - while Bob Baffert has 15, including Kentucky Derby ante-post favourite American Pharoah.

The Triple Crown starts with the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 2, followed by the Preakness at Pimlico Downs on May 16 and the Belmont on June 6.

The Great War to Return in 96ROCK Stakes

The Great War to Return in 96ROCK Stakes

A promising colt who finished fourth in last year's Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) is set to make his 2015 debut in the $75,000 96ROCK Stakes for 3-year-olds Jan. 31 at Turfway Park.

The 96ROCK, at 6 1/2 furlongs, is the first of two local steppingstones to the $550,000 Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral Stakes March 21. The other is the $125,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes Feb. 28.

The Great War heads a field of 12 Saturday evening. The War Front  colt finished fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile behind Texas Red,Carpe Diem, and Upstart, who won his 2015 debut Jan. 24 in the grade II Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The Great War finished 8 1/4 lengths behind Texas Red in his first start on dirt and initial outing around two turns.

Trained by Wesley Ward for owners Joseph Allen, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith, The Great War in seven starts prior to the Breeders' Cup competed in turf sprints in Ireland and England and picked up a stakes victory. He moved from the barn of Aidan O'Brien to Ward after the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and has been working very well on the Polytrack at Turfway.

A Kentucky-bred out of the Pulpit mare Glide, The Great War last worked Jan. 24, breezing five furlongs in an easy 1:03 4/5. That followed a bullet work of :59 3/5 for five furlongs Jan. 17.

Albin Jiminez, leading rider at the winter/spring meet, has the call aboard The Great War from post 6 as the 122-pound highweight in the 96ROCK

  • Cox Plate winner Adelaide due to trial within four weeks

Champion trainer Chris Waller is in the envious position of having one of the most exciting talents in the country hail from his Rosehill stable - Adelaide,

As the Melbourne and Sydney carnivals draw closer, Waller’s highly dedicated team have shifted up a gear and will be ready to produce the stable’s finest horse flesh, spearheaded by 2014 Cox Plate winner Adelaide.

The impressive-looking son of Galileo was transferred to Waller from the powerful Irish stable of Aidan O’Brien following his breathtaking Cox Plate win, where he defeated Fawkner after making a long sustained run on the home turn.

Adelaide will be targeting the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick during The Championships on April 11.

"The most important thing with these imported horses is to get them to acclimatise quickly,” Waller told Sky Sports radio.
"Adelaide has coped very well since being with us.
"He’s starting three-quarter pacework now and is due to trial in about four weeks.

Rogue Trader, who runs in the colours of Coolmore supremo John Magnier and was ridden to victory today by his Ballydoyle employee and work rider Nina Carberry, is now set to join trainer Tom Taaffe. Charlie Swan Said "things just didn't go right for him in Leopardstown although obviously that was a lot hotter race."He won his bumper by 13 lengths and now his maiden hurdle by 12. He's a staying type of horse but he's not slow and he's a chaser in the making. They went a strong gallop and Nina used her brain as I told her to make it.

"I'm dropping him in to Tom Taaffe on the way home."

A selling winner in his time cross-channel, when he predominantly raced for William Jarvis, Bishan Bedi made a pleasing start for the O'Brien family when taking the Dundalk Stadium-Light Up Your Night Handicap, at his ease under Donnacha.

Bought at Doncaster last September for 5,500 pounds, here the top-weight came through from the rear to lead a furlong out, before going on to score by five and a half lengths from Moss Nation.

Well-backed favourite Fairy Foxglove (from around 5/1 earlier in the day into 7/4) had every chance before having to settle for third.

Aidan trains the victorious Intikhab gelding for his wife Annmarie who commented: "We're very pleased with that.

"He was bought to have something for the lads to ride here in Dundalk.

"He was entitled to win on his English form."

Thankfully Danny Mullins and Stroll On were okay after the filly stumbled and unseated rider leaving the stalls. (MG & EM)

OTI Racing bought into nine Irish Bred Fastnet Rock colts in 2014 in Partnership with Coolmore. Report By Paul Rhodes

AUSTRALIAN syndicate OTI Racing Purchased nine Irish-bred Fastnet Rock yearling colts in 2014 that will be raced in Europe in partnership with Coolmore Stud in 2015.

Following a due diligence process, OTI purchased a 75 per cent stake in each of the nine yearlings with Coolmore retaining a 25 per cent interest.

In October 2014, the colts were allocated to trainers with the list including Andre Fabre, Nicolas Clement and John Hammond in France & Luca Cumani.

Coolmore approached OTI Racing about the deal with a wish to involve Australians who know French racing and respect the ability of the stallion.

Fastnet Rock has sired 16 Group 1 winners in his first five Australian crops but it has taken a little longer for the stallion to be recognised in Europe.

OTI believe that the best is yet to come for Fastnet Rock in the Northern Hemisphere.

The first of the 2 year olds has been named Fastnet Monsson.

OTI have previously had success buying European horses in training with Manighar, a subsequent triple Group 1 winner in Australia, and Bauer, who finished second in the 2008 Melbourne Cup after winning the Group 3 Geelong Cup.

FIRST FOALS ARE ALL CLASS FOR CAMELOT

Camelot headshot looking to his right

Two excellent foals by European champion 2YO and 3YO Camelot were born at Coolmore in the last few days.

Mora Bai produced a colt at Coolmore on Monday night. She is already the dam of Beresford Stakes-Gr.2 winner David Livingston and is a half-sister to 6-time Gr.1 winner High Chaparral.

Apparel foaled a filly on Sunday night. A daughter of Gr.2 Sun Chariot Stakes winner Independence, Apparel is a half-sister to Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes winner Mount Nelson and Gr.2 Great Voltigeur Stakes winner Monitor Closely.

Coolmore manager Christy Grassick enthused “Both are smashing bay foals, correct and full of quality. It’s very exciting to see a young sire getting such good foals.”

Camelot, who stands at Coolmore Stud for a fee of €25,000, proved himself to be Montjeu’s fastest son when winning the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas before landing the Gr.1 Epsom Derby by 5 lengths from Main Sequence who on Saturday was crowned champion older male and champion male turf horse at the Eclipse Awards.

Australia announced as joint top three-year-old in the world

with Irish bred The Grey Gatsby and Kingman

Irish Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings 2014

USTRALIA with J O'Brien wins from left THE GREY GATSBY 2nd and right TELESCOPE 3rd in International stakes at York 20-8-14. Copyright Martin Lynch.

Another remarkable year in the annals of Irish horseracing highlighted by the inauguration of Irish Champions Weekend where British raiders enjoyed remarkable success in annexing three of the four Group 1 races on offer.

Nonetheless, Aidan O’Brien managed to keep three of the five Irish Classics at home, winning the Etihad Airways Irish 1,000 Guineas (G1) with MARVELLOUS (IRE)(116), who was rated joint champion European 3-y-o female miler, the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (G1) with dual Derby winner AUSTRALIA (GB)(127), who was joint champion 3-y-o colt in the World, and Darley Irish Oaks winner BRACELET (IRE)(112).

AUSTRALIA (GB)(127) shared that accolade with Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas (G1) winner KINGMAN (GB)(125)(LWBRR 127)and also with his conqueror in the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes (G1), THE GREY GATSBY (IRE) (127), both of which were trained in Britain by John Gosden and Kevin Ryan respectively.

In winning the Investec Epsom Derby (G1) with AUSTRALIA (GB), his trainer Aidan O’Brien made history by becoming the first trainer in the 235-year history of that race to win in three consecutive years, following on from CAMELOT (124) in 2012 and RULER OF THE WORLD (122) in 2013.

Aidan O’Brien also created history in training ADELAIDE (IRE)(120) to win the premier championship race in Australia, namely the Sportingbet Cox Plate (G1), which was the first time the winner of that historic race was trained outside of Australasia.

A similar momentous feat was achieved by Tom Hogan, trainer of the globe-trotting GORDON LORD BYRON (IRE)(116), the first Northern Hemisphere trained winner of a Group 1 race in New South Wales, namely the George Ryder Stakes (G1) at Rosehill in Sydney. While a number of European trained horses have succeeded in winning such iconic Group 1 handicaps as the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup in recent years, these two great Irish successes marked the first time Group 1 success was achieved by Irish-trained horses in weight-for-age contests Down Under.

Irish-trained horses also continued their recent excellent record of success at the British Champions Weekend with the Ballydoyle-trained juvenile filly TOGETHER FOREVER (IRE)(110) winning the Group 1 Dubai Fillies Mile, the Dermot Weld unbeaten stayer FORGOTTEN RULES (IRE) (113) winning the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup (G2), andGORDON LORD BYRON (IRE)(116) coming home first in the QIPCO British Champions Sprint (G2).

Aidan O’Brien managed to keep three of the five Irish Classics at home, winning the Etihad Airways Irish 1,000 Guineas (G1) with MARVELLOUS (IRE)(116), who was rated joint champion European 3-y-o female miler, the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (G1) with dual Derby winnerAUSTRALIA (GB)(127), who was joint champion 3-y-o colt in the World, and Darley Irish Oaks winner BRACELET (IRE)(112).

Australia and Mastercraftsman son are joint world-champions

Last year’s brilliant G1 Derby hero Australia (4c Galileo-Ouija Board, by Cape Cross) has been officially recognised for his outstanding achievements by being ranked jointly the world’s best three-year-old of 2014.

Australia was given a rating of 127 in the 2014 World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, announced at a ceremony in London on Tuesday, after a fabulous season in which he also ran out a facile winner of the G1 Irish Derby at the Curragh. The son of Galileo achieved his highest rating when stepping back to 10 furlongs to win the G1 Juddmonte International at York.

Australia has retired to stand at Coolmore in 2015, covering for a fee of €50,000.

Mastercraftsman finished 2014 as champion second-crop sire and one of the main contributors to that title was The Grey Gatsby (4c Mastercraftsman-Marie Vison, by Entrepreneur), who joins Australia as one of the world’s joint-champion three-year-olds on a rating of 127.

Frank Gillespie’s colt was trained by Kevin Ryan to win the G2 Dante Stakes at York in May before going on to capture the G1 French Derby at Chantilly in June. He rounded off the season with victory in the G1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown in September. The Grey Gatsby stays in training this year.

Ballymacoll Stud star mare to visit Australia

MATING plans have been finalised for the blue-chip broodmare band at Ballymacoll Stud in County Meath, with the operation's jewel Highland Gift set for a liaison with Coolmore's new recruit Australia.

Highland Gift, a 22-year-old daughter of Generous, is the dam of nine winners including 2,000 Guineas and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes hero Golan and Dante Stakes scorer and Derby runner-up Tartan Bearer.

She has also produced the winner Long View, who was sold for 1,100,000gns at Tattersalls in December, to Australia's sire Galileo and promising three-year-old filly Yarrow to Galileo's half-brother Sea The Stars.

"She is amazing for her age but I was keen to use a young stallion and Australia is a beautiful-looking horse - plus we can't afford Galileo any more," said stud manager Peter Reynolds of the mare, who is in foal to Arcano.

Ballymacoll is also home to Highland Gift's Group-placed daughters Gift Range and Leocorno. Gift Range is in foal to Dubawi and will visit Kodiac, while Leocorno is barren and booked to Lope De Vega.

The stud's outstanding racecourse performer Islington, a 16-year-old daughter of Sadler's Wells who won the Nassau Stakes, Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf and two renewals of the Yorkshire Oaks, produced a Shamardal filly this month - remarkably, her ninth female offspring from as many foals. She will now visit exciting young sire Sea The Stars.

"She's been getting some winners recently [Bohemian Dance and Upper Street] and she has a very nice three-year filly with Sir Michael Stoute called Angel Vision, who is by Oasis Dream and is looking good," said Reynolds.

"I'm not sure we've found the right combination for Islington yet but Sea The Stars has made a fantastic start and has worked well with Sadler's Wells mares, so I thought why not."

Olympienne, a sister to Islington, is barren and set for a liaison with Dark Angel. Another sister, La Divina, is in foal to Iffraaj and booked to Shamardal.

Justlookdontouch, that trio's Galileo three-parts sister, will feature in the first book of brilliant miler Kingman after delivering her foal by Leroidesanimaux.

Desert Bloom, the dam of the Ballymacoll-bred Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente, is set to be covered by Cacique after producing her foal by Redoute's Choice.

"She hasn't produced many winners but she has got one hell of a horse in Fiorente," said Reynolds of the 15-year-old daughter of Pilsudski. "She has a few problems and her foals have to be weaned straight away.

"But she has a lovely Fastnet Rock two-year-old colt with Sir Michael Stoute and she's in foal to Redoute's Choice.

"The Australian resale market is massive for us and so we keep that in mind with the matings. Australians love European stayers and, although the Cacique mating might not produce a stayer, the Danehill sire-line is very well respected down there."

Also with the Australian market in mind, Spring Symphony, the dam of Flemington Group 1 winner Glass Harmonium and last year's Duke of Edinburgh Handicap scorer Arab Spring, is visiting Maxios at Gestut Fahrhof this year. Maxios is by Monsun, as are Fiorente and Arab Spring.

Musidora Stakes winner Liber Nauticus will be covered by Exceed And Excel after delivering her first foal by Dark Angel and the stud will use high-achieving French first-season sire Siyouni for the first time, on the Grade 3-placed Danehill Dancer mare Kitty Hawk.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of Ballymacoll Stud operating under ownership of the Weinstock and Sobell families. In that time the farm has bred and raced outstanding performers such as Conduit, North Light, Pilsudski, Sun Princess and Troy.

Tattersalls Gold Cup could lose G1 status

Seven Group One races have been identified as being at risk of losing their Group One status next year.

The mile-and-a-quarter Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh in late May has been the starting point in a campaign for many a superstar but is one of the races named at risk by the European Pattern Committee.

It has been won by such stars of the turf as Daylami in 1998, Montjeu (2000), Fantastic Light (2001) and Hurricane Run (2006) and in more recent times by So You Think in 2011 and 2012 and Al Kazeem, who upset Camelot in 2013.

However, the race tends to attract just a handful of runners and Noble Mission beat just four rivals when successful last season.

One of the other races that could be downgraded in 2016 is the Prix Royal-Oak. Run over just short of two miles at Longchamp in late October, the stamina test has been a favourite target for British stayers and has been won for the last two years by the Marco Botti-trained Tac De Boistron.

Its biggest winner in recent seasons was the Aidan O'Brien-trained Yeats in 2008, hero of the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot four years in a row from 2006 to 2009.

HRI announce flat race upgrades

Mon 19th Jan 2015, 15:00
A new Listed race will be run at Cork in April
A new Listed race will be run at Cork in April
(Healy Racing Photos)
Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) today announced a number of enhancements to the Irish Flat Pattern and Listed race programme, in addition to the Sprint Programme upgrades previously announced for the 2015 season.

The principal changes concern the further improvement of the programme for fillies and mares with the Lanwades Stud Stakes (registered as the Ridgewood Pearl) at the Curragh on Irish Guineas weekend being upgraded from Group 3 to Group 2, along with the creation of two new 12f Listed races at Cork in early April and Naas in mid-October.

Additionally, the Curragh Stakes staged at the Curragh in late August will be upgraded to Group 3. This race is ideally positioned in the both the domestic and international calendar and provides a first Group 3 race for Irish 2yo sprinters over the minimum trip.

Confirming the Pattern race enhancements, HRI's Director of Racing, Jason Morris commented:

"HRI is delighted to have secured European agreement for all our proposed Irish upgrades in 2015. The promotion of the Ridgewood Pearl to Group 2 status and the creation of two new fillies Listed races over 12 furlongs will provide further encouragement to owners and trainers to put high quality mares in training in Ireland and to carry on racing them here beyond their three-year-old careers."

"The promotion of the Curragh Stakes to Group 3 status, along with the previously announced upgrades to three older horse sprints (Greenlands, Sapphire and Flying Five) from Group 3 to Group 2 and the creation of the Lacken Stakes (Group 3, 3yo only) at Naas in early June, reinforces HRI's commitment to improve the Irish sprinting programme, which will also see additional maiden race opportunities for both two and three-year-olds over the shorter distances in 2015."

Galileo return for Ouija Board after losing foal

OUIJA BOARD will return to Galileo this season after slipping a  colt foal by the sire last year.

The daughter of Cape Cross, who carried the colours of her owner-breeder Lord Derby to victory at the highest level across the globe, will travel to County Tipperary to visit the champion sire early in the season.

"She's absolutely fit as a fiddle, it's just one of those things," said Peter Stanley, brother to Lord Derby and owner of New England Stud.

Ouija Board hit the headlines again in 2014 as the dam of dual Derby winner Australia, also by Galileo.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained colt, who was bought by Coolmore for 525,000gns at Tattersalls, later added the Juddmonte International to his top-flight tally before retiring to Coolmore, where he will begin stud duties alongside his sire next month.

Australia is the fourth winner from as many runners out of Ouija Board. Her first foal Voodoo Prince thrived after relocating to the base of Australian trainer Chris Waller, winning the Group 3 Easter Cup at Caulfield, while his half-siblings Aegaeus and Filia Regina both collected minor accolades in Britain.

Ouija Board's most recent foal, a Dubawi juvenile colt, was bought privately by Sheikh Mohammed last summer. He is not yet registered in training.

The Wow Signal

The Wow Signal: Group 1 winner is  by Starspangledbanner

 PICTURE: ScoopDyga

No return to Coolmore for Starspangledbanner:

Coolmore stallion Starspangledbanner will not be returning to stand at Cork's Castlehyde Stud in 2015 after a bout of colic was discovered at Christmas time.

The subfertile son of Choisir is now thankfully fully recovered, but will now be prepared to stand another season at Rosemont Stud in Australia, which is owned by Anthony Mithen, due to big risks about his health on the plane.

A decision about whether Starspangledbanner will return to Coolmore's breeding roster in 2016 is under review and will be announced at a later date.

Starspangledbanner was retired to stand at Coolmore in County Tipperary in 2011 and 2012 after a stellar career on the track, but after his subfertility problems were discovered, he made a return to the track, which didn't turn out to be as successful first time round and was shuttled to Rosemount Stud, where he now covers small but carefully managed books.

After a brilliant start with his first two-year-old runners in Europe, it was decided he was to arranged for him to be shuttled back to Castlehyde for 2015.

In 20 runners, Starspangledbanner had 11 winners - a phenomenal 55% winners-to-runners strike-rate - including the very highly regarded Royal Ascot winners The Wow Signal & Anthem Alexander, with the former following up his Coventry Stakes win with the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville.

Starspangledbanner only had a small number of yearlings up for sale in 2014, but they were in high demand, especially with bloodstock experts Peter and Ross Doyle, who snapped up the most expensive of the lot, a colt from the family of 2000 Guineas winner Footstepsinthesand, for 260,000gns, at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

El Salvador to stand at Killack Stud in Wexford

LAST year's Irish Cesarewitch winner El Salvador has been acquired by trainer Shay Slevin, who will stand the horse at his Killack Stud in Kiltrea, County Wexford, from this year.

Regally bred as a son of Galileo and Coronation Stakes heroine Balisada, El Salvador was trained by Aidan O'Brien to win three middle-distance races in the spring of his four-year-old season.

Later that year he finished a creditable sixth behind Estimate in the Gold Cup.

El Salvador was kept busy at five last year, making 12 starts and winning four of them as well as finishing second to Pique Sous in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He signed off his career with a one-length victory in the Irish Cesarewitch, giving his young pilot Donnacha O'Brien the biggest success of his career.

"I saw a need for a son of Galileo in Wexford and El Salvador should do well - there's been a good bit of interest in him already," said Slevin, who will support the stallion with 15 of his own mares. "He won seven races, is out of a high-class mare and stands 16.2hh."

El Salvador's fee is on application.

Up sells for $2.2m to ignite Keeneland

THE formula of selling a Galileo mare in foal to War Front to sell in Kentucky struck gold again on Tuesday when Group 2 winner Up sold for $2.2 million on the second day of the Keeneland January Sale.

The six-year-old, a half-sister to Middle Park Stakes winner and Group 1 sire Dutch Art, was consigned by Four Star Sales as agent and bought for the seven-figure price by Frank Taylor on behalf of Robert Naify's Ran Jan Racing.

UP winner of the Lanwades Stud Fillies Stakes and Blandford Stakes for Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore partners, becomes the most expensive horse sold at the Keeneland January Sale since Irish Cherry sold for $2.7m at the 2008 renewal.Ran Jan Racing is best known as the owner and breeder of last year's Grade 2 John C Mabee Stakes winner Moulin De Mougin and 2013 Grade 2 Royal Heroine Mile winner Schiaparelli.

Other Galileo mares sold in foal to War Front in the US in recent years include Betterbetterbetter, who sold to Whisper Hill Farm for $5.2m at Fasig-Tipton in November 2013, and Aloof, who sold to the same purchaser for $3.9m at Keeneland last November.

Up was followed into the ring by her War Front yearling filly, who was sold to LNJ Foxwoods for $800,000.

Up and her War Front yearling filly have commanded the two highest prices of the sale up to halfway through Tuesday's second session.

Ocovango to stand at Coolmore jumps division

GROUP 2 winner Ocovango has been snapped up by Coolmore to join its jumps division for 2015.

The five-year-old is the second son of Monsun to stand under Coolmore's National Hunt banner following Getaway, who covered a large book of 295 mares last year.

Trained by Andre Fabre, Ocovango carried the colours of Prince Faisal during a career that spanned three seasons.

A winner on his only start over a mile at two, Ocovango won the Listed Prix Francois Lathet on his seasonal reappearance at three before landing the Group 2 Prix Greffulhe at Saint-Cloud.

Ocovango then finished fifth, beaten two and a half lengths, behind Ruler Of The World in the Derby, and was third in the Grand Prix de Paris and Prix Niel. His last outing at three was in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, in which he finished down the field.

Ocovango failed to get his head in front last year, but ran some admirable races in defeat, including when third in the Group 3 La Coupe at Longchamp.

"We think Ocovango has a lot in common with Flemensfirth," said Beeches Stud manager Robert McCarthy.

"He's a lovely big horse, a great colour and like Flemensfirth he was unbeaten at two, a Group winner over ten furlongs and being by Monsun he's an outcross for all the Sadler's Wells-line mares."

Bred by Watership Down Stud, Ocovango is the first foal out of the unraced Gone West mare Crystal Maze, who is a daughter of Fillies' Mile winner Crystal Music.

Crystal Music's Dubawi colt sold for 1.6 million guineas to John Ferguson at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale last year.

The former Aidan O'Brien trained John Constable has been introduced at odds of 25/1 for the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham by Boylesports following his debut success over hurdles at Ludlow this afternoon.

The Navan maiden winner was an easy to back 6/1 chance on first start for Evan Williams but belied those odds with a smooth success in the hands of Paul Moloney.

The four-year-old son of Montjeu was an above average sort on the flat when trained in Ireland. He finished in the money on eight of his eleven starts and achieved a rating of 94.

MASTERCRAFTSMAN TAKES SECOND-SEASON SIRE TITLE

Mastercraftsman walking across the paddock

Mastercraftsman fought off some stiff competition to finish 2014 as the year’s leading Second-Crop Sire in Europe.

The son of Danehill Dancer sired progeny who earned £3,401,210 in Europe last year and he also took the title for number of individual winners, siring 64, according to Racing Post statistics.

There were many highlights through the year, headed by three European Classic heroes.

Kingston Hill (3c Mastercraftsman-Audacieuse, by Rainbow Quest) finished second to the great Australia (3c Galileo-Ouija Board, by Cape Cross) in the G1 Derby before going onto a brilliant success in the G1 St Leger at Doncaster.

Paul Smith’s colt, who also won the G1 Racing Post Trophy as juvenile, stays in training in 2015 as does The Grey Gatsby (3c Mastercraftsman-Marie Vison, by Entrepreneur), who won the G1 French Derby at Chantilly during a fabulous year.

The Grey Gatsby, who won the G2 Dante Stakes at York in May, rounded off his season with a success in the G1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

Meanwhile in Italy, Vague Nouvelle (3f Mastercraftsman-Zona, by Mr Greeley) won the Italian 1,000 Guineas – the G3 Premio Regina Elena in Rome.

O'Brien honoured at Moyglare Dinner

Sun 4th Jan 2015, 12:03

Trainer Aidan O'Brien and the Organising Committee behind 2014's hugely successful Champions Weekend, both received presentations from the Turf Club at the annual Moyglare Dinner which was held in the K Club, on Saturday evening.

Every year at the dinner the Turf Club honours an individual or an organisation which has had an exceptional year or who over a period of time has made an exceptional contribution to Irish racing.

The presentation was made by Turf Club Senior Steward Neville O'Byrne, who also gave the annual Moyglare speech.

Aidan O'Brien was honoured for his historic achievement in training a third Epsom Derby winner in a row with Australia, following on the successes of Ruler of the World"(2013) and Camelot in 2012 .

Speaking of Aidan's achievement Neville O'Byrne said "Aidan O'Brien is no stranger to breaking records. He has already trained multiple Group one winners and in 2014 he trained his 11th winner of the Irish Derby since 1997".

"However it is not for the creation of that record that Aidan is receiving his presentation tonight but for another record he set in 2014 in relation to the Epsom Derby. The Epsom Derby was run for the first time in 1780. Since then it has been run on 235 occasions .

However in 2014 Aidan achieved something that no trainer has ever achieved before in the history of the race when he became the first person to train three consecutive winners of the race - an incredible achievement."

"In the process he was recording his fifth Epsom Derby winner and his 21st Classics win in the UK".

At the dinner the Turf Club also honoured the organising committee behind the hugely successful Champions Weekend which took place at Leopardstown and the Curragh, 13th and 14th September.

In making the presentation Neville O'Byrne, said: "Starting from scratch the committee, along with the various sponsors and partners,  put together a racing extravaganza over the two days which was an unqualified success. With total prize money of over €3.7m and attendances over 24,000 we saw the best of flat racing that this country has to offer.”

"For the first time we welcomed QIPCO as a sponsor and this enabled the prize fund for the Champion Stakes to be raised to €1m. With 50% of the races being won by British trained runners  this will no doubt encourage overseas trainers to come back in greater numbers next year and make the weekend even more competitive".

CHAMPION GALILEO IS “WORLD NUMBER ONE”

Galileo headshot looking to his right

The mighty Galileo not only finished 2014 with a sixth European sires’ championship but, according to figures compiled by the TDN, he was also the world’s top stallion of the year.

Writing in the TDN, Bill Oppenheim stated that Galileo had claimed his “third consecutive title as the TDN Leading North American and European Sire. Having won that title in 2012 and 2013 with progeny earnings of $13.4 million and $14.3 million …. Galileo set his own record this year, with progeny earnings over $18.6 million.

“These included 38 black-type winners, 66 black-type horses, 25 Group winners, 50 Group horses, and eight Group 1 winners…. In 10 crops of racing age, Galileo has sired 151 black-type winners (average 15 a crop), 264 black-type horses (26 per crop), 95 Group stakes winners, 183 Group stakes horses (18 per crop), and 41 Group 1 winners. World Number One.”

According to Racing Post statistics, Galileo’s progeny earned an incredible £7,193,916 – more than double any other stallion – to become the champion British and Irish Flat sire. It brought the title to Coolmore for a 27th time and it was the 25th consecutive occasion that a Coolmore stallion had taken the championship.

Highlights in 2014 included the G1 Derby success of the great Australia (3c Galileo-Ouija Board, by Cape Cross), who has joined his sire at Coolmore after also posting victories in the G1 Irish Derby and G1 Juddmonte International.

Further Classic glory came in the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas with Marvellous (3f Galileo-You’resothrilling, by Storm Cat) while Tapestry (3f Galileo-Rumpelstiltskin, by Danehill) won the G1 Yorkshire Oaks at York, beating Oaks winner Taghrooda.

Meanwhile, globetrotter Adelaide (3c Galileo-Elletelle, by Elnadim), travelled to Australia to win the G1 Cox Plate in October having landed the G1 Secretariat Stakes in Chicago in August.

Noble Mission (5h Galileo-Kind, by Danehill) took the G1 Champion Stakes at Ascot along with the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup and G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, while Galileo has a fabulous Classic generation to represent him in 2015.

Found (2f Galileo-Red Evie, by Intikhab) won the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and Together Forever (2f Galileo-Green Room, by Theatrical) the G1 Fillies’ Mile while his outstanding colts include Gleneagles (2c Galileo-You’resothrilling, by Storm Cat), who won the G1 National Stakes and was disqualified from first in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp.

Facile G2 Vintage Stakes scorer Highland Reel (2c Galileo-Hveger, by Danehill) and John F Kennedy (2c Galileo-Rumplestiltskin, by Danehill), an easy Leopardstown G3 victor, are others who suggest that the world’s number one sire could be in for another good year in 2015.
