FOUNDRY Storms home on Australian debut

Former Ballydoyle inmate Foundry makes classy Australian Debut he just got up to

win & it was only 7 furlongs he stayed on so strong nice win some turn of foot

Foundry was on our horses to follow list last year great start to his new career in Oz

FOUNDRY, a horse that Aidan O’Brien thought highly enough to enter in the Melbourne Cup, posted an impressive first-up win for Lloyd Williams in today’s tab.com.au Trophy at Flemington.

The four-year-old was one of about dozen European horses Williams purchased and he gave his new owner an immediate return.

Nick Williams said the win of Foundry was “surprising”, but noted it was a credit to all those at Mt Macedon.

“I didn’t think he would be sharp enough for them over 1400 metres,” Williams said.

“It’s only his fourth time to the races. He had one start as a two-year-old then missed most of his three-year-old with a couple of niggles.

“We were lucky enough to secure him and the future looks bright.”

Foundry, $9, finished powerfully for Craig Williams to edge out Our Hand Of Faith, $5, to win by a nose with a half head to Decircles, the $4 favorite, third.

Decircles was the last ride for Irish apprentice Oisin Murphy who tomorrow returns to England.

Ruler looking to conquer the world in Dubai World Cup

12 February 2014 |

Ruler looking to conquer the world in Dubai World Cup

Ruler of The World on his way to winning the 2013 Investec Epsom Derby.

Derby winner Ruler of The World features among the early 341 entries for the Dubai World Cup in Meydan next month.

The four-year-old’s handler, the QIPCO British Champions Series’ Top Trainer for 2013, Aidan O’Brien, has also entered Breeders’ Cup Turf champion Magician and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes third, Kingsbarns, for the Group 1 contest.

Kingsbarns’ winning rival on QIPCO British Champions Day was Olympic Glory and Richard Hannon’s star is also an entry for the United Arab Emirates-based fixture.

Certify, who extended her unbeaten run to five races in the Group 2 Cape Verdi at the Dubai World Cup Carnival last month, features for Godolphin as the most prominent of their selections.

Last year’s runner-up, international fans’ favourite Red Caudeaux, is again an intended runner for trainer Ed Dunlop.

Of the international contingent, Breeders' Cup Classic winner Mucho Macho Man could lead the American charge, with Hong Kong Cup victor Akeed Mofeed and former Melbourne Cup champion Dunaden is also entered.

Former O'Brien ace Mars kicks off his new career

MIKE DE KOCK has experienced a great deal of success in thepast with horses previously in thecare of Aidan O'Brien and it will be hoped a change of scenery can prove equally beneficial to Mars.

RELATED LINKS

The colt, previously owned by the Coolmore partners, has his first start for his new trainer in Thursday's Group 3 Firebreak Stakes at Meydan.

Third in last year's St James's Palace Stakes and sixth in both the 2,000 Guineas and Derby prior to that, Mars was perhaps a bit disappointing on his two most recent starts but De Kock clearly likes him.

He said: "The trip is going to be his minimum but we need to get him on the track and it makes sense to try him on Tapeta. He won at Dundalk on a similar surface but we need to see how he goes, in a race, on this surface, which he works well on."

Only nine have been declared for the mile contest, including dual South African Horse of the Year Variety Club, who is a first UAE runner for Joey Ramsden.

Eleven have been declared for the UAE 2,000 Guineas over a mile on Tapeta, a race De Kock has won five times, with each victor subsequently winning on Dubai World Cup night.

De Kock has four runners, the most interesting of whom isWednaan, winner of a Yarmouth maiden on his sole previous start.

The trainer said: "He's still green, a bit raw, and it could be inexperience that catches him out. The plan was to run in the trial but he was coughing after quarantine so we had to skip that.

"The preparation has not been ideal but he's fit, well and ready for a race. He has a lot of growing up to do and it will be interesting to see how he runs against much more experienced rivals."

Saeed Bin Suroor is seeking a fifth win in the race, but his first since 2009, and saddles Emirates Flyer, winner of the 7f trial a month ago but rejected here by Silvestre de Sousa, who chooses to ride stablemate Paximadia.

Bin Suroor, who won last week's UAE 1,000 Guineas with Ihtimal, said: "Paximadia has been working well since arriving from Australia and I really like him. He handles the Tapeta well at home and his Australian form is good. Emirates Flyer is in great form but this is obviously a stronger race than the trial."

Fellow Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby also has two runners and again an Australian recruit appears stable first string on jockey bookings with Mickael Barzalona choosing Group 1 winner Long John over trial runner-up Safety Check.

Appleby said: "Long John is something of an enigma - his form is top notch but he shows very little at home. However, we were warned that would be the case so we're really looking forward to running him.

"Safety Check ran a great race in the trial and we were very happy with him. The longer trip is ideal as he won over a mile at Newmarket. It's nice to have two live chances in the race."

Irish raiders Jamesie, Balmont Mast and Russian Soul are among a maximum field of 14 in the Group 3 Al Shindagha Sprint.

Star strikes for O'Briens

 By Gary Carson

Lone Star drifted slightly in the betting on track but got the job done in the mile maiden at Dundalk for Aidan and Joseph O'Brien.

80/1 outsider Scooping took them along but gave way over a furlong from home asJoseph O'Brien drove his mount into the lead.

He galloped on strongly in the closing stages to post a two-and-a-quarter length success at 6/5 (opened 10/11).

Scooping just lost the runner-up spot close home to Bobby's Heart. Flare Of Firelight was backed on track from 6/4 into 11/10 favourite but could only finish a well held fourth.

Lone Star had finished down the field on his debut in a Curragh maiden last October but ran well here last month when second to Not Your Call.

“He's progressed since the last day. He might go for a winners' race and we'll see where he slots in,” said O'Brien senior afterwards.

Aidan O'Brien ATR Interview

Verrazano is a lovely horse very exciting very laid back with a good temperament very relaxed mind he has a lovely way of lobbing along

Magician is great he is cantering well anything from a mile to a mile and a half you'd imagine and is very exciting hes in good shape hopefully he can do what he did last year

Every thing is good things have gone well with Australia could not be happier

Its just great to have a horse like Plinth to go for these races again

 RTE PREVIEW DUNDALK

Aidan O'Brien hasn't saddled too many runners in recent weeks but Lone Star represents the master of Ballydoyle in The Champions Restaurant At Dundalk Stadium Maiden and he ought to go well again having displayed improved form to finish second here at the beginning of last month.

Reckless Abandon - Norfolk Stakes Royal Ascot 21.6.1

Reckless Abandon: Group 1 winner's dam will visit Galileo this year

 PICTURE: Edward Whitaker (racingpost.com/photos)

Sant Elena set for date with mighty Galileo

SANT ELENA, the dam of dual Group 1-winning two-year-old and Kildangan Stud newcomer Reckless Abandon, will visit champion sire Galileo in 2014.

She is currently in foal to Darley's exciting young sire New Approach and is due to foal later this spring for her owners, Car Colston Hall Stud in Nottinghamshire.

The 11-year-old Efisio mare won two races for Geoff Wragg before gaining valuable black type at Woodbine. While on the other side of the Atlantic, Sant Elena was covered by Exchange Rate - a mating that produced Reckless Abandon -before travelling back to Car Colston Hall Stud.

She has a yearling colt by Aqlaam who was sold to Angus Gold on behalf of Shadwell for 200,000gns in November, and an unraced three-year-old Dansili filly named Free Rein, who has been retained by the stud to race in the colours of the Eclipse Partnership Syndicate and is in training with Ralph Beckett.

"Free Rein had a little setback at two but she's back in work and Ralph is pleased with her," said stud manager Keith Haggins. "Sant Elena's dam Argent Du Bois, who has also produced dual US Grade 1 winner Ticker Tape, was barren last year but will visit Cape Cross in the coming months.

"We're desperately hoping for another filly from her to continue the line," said Haggins of the 18-year-old daughter of Silver Hawk.

"For her last three covers we've sent her to Pivotal, Dalakhani and Selkirk, who we consider good broodmare sires, and she's given us a colt each time.

"Argent Du Bois is out of Car Colston Hall Stud foundation mare Wiener Wald, who is 22 and in foal to Nathaniel, a stallion the stud has a share in.

"Wiener Wald is due to foal at the end of March - again, we would like a filly out of her, but would be more than happy with a colt," Haggins said of the Woodman mare, who has produced seven winners including Racing Post Trophy hero Crowded House.

"She looks 15 rather than 22. She is embedded in the history of the stud and it's fair to say that without her we wouldn't be where we are now.

"We have no mating plans for her this year and we hope she will live a long, happy retirement at Car Colston Hall Stud."

Wiener Wald's daughter Riotous Applause, the dam of Listed-winning two-year-old and former Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale top lot Invincible Warrior, is back in foal to that colt's sire Invincible Spirit and will visit Iffraaj in the coming months.

"Car Colston Hall Stud looks forward to supporting Reckless Abandon in his first year at stud by sending him the well-bred winning daughter of Hernando Hold On Tight," said Haggins.

"We are looking forward to the coming breeding season as we also plan to use the exciting new sires Al Kazeem and Declaration Of War and between current and forthcoming stock we are keeping everything crossed for the stud to breed a fifth Group 1 winner."

Aidan O'Brien

Aidan O'Brien: back with a G1 hurdles runner for first time since 2002

 PICTURE: Patrick McCann (racingpost.com/photos)

Plinth to be a first for O'Brien since Istabraq

AIDAN O'BRIEN will return to the Grade 1 spotlight on Sunday when Ireland's perennial champion Flat trainer runs Plinth on the Hennessy Gold Cup undercard at Leopardstown.

O'Brien's contender faces a huge step up in level to contest the Grade 1 Gala Retail Spring Juvenile Hurdle having narrowly won a maiden hurdle on his one run over obstacles.

That head verdict over Ivan Grozny - who reopposes on Sunday -  was made to look a lot better when the latter demolished a large field of maidens at Naas to surge up the market for the JCB Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Plinth is a 16-1 chance for the Triumph behind 8-1 joint favourites Ivan Grozny and Le Rocher but that gap could close substantially with a win on Sunday as O'Brien saddles his first Grade 1 hurdles starter since Istabraq was pulled up as favourite for the 2002 Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Frank Berry, racing manager to Plinth's owner JP McManus, who also runs Carlingford Lough in Sunday's Dr P J Moriarty Novice Chase, said: "Both horses appear to be in good form and the intention is for both to run.

"Aidan [O'Brien] and John [Kiely] are happy with them."

Gordon Elliott, who has supplemented recent purchase Tiger Roll for the Spring Juvenile Hurdle, has reported Don Cossack to be in great shape for the Moriarty.

"We missed Christmas time with him as he had a couple of quick runs last year," said Elliott. "But he seems to be in great form, so we'll let him take his chance on Sunday and see how he gets on."

In other news on the undercard, trainer Philip Fenton reportsThe Tullow Tank to be super form as he bids for his third Grade 1 success of the season in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle.

Fenton said: "He has surprised us this season. Last year he looked average and he was still developing but fair dues to Barry [Connell], we took our time with him and those couple of runs over hurdles last season have helped him to grow up.

"When he won his bumper last season we felt that he might develop into a novice hurdler this season, but we didn't expect him to be a Grade 1 horse. He has had a clear run since Christmas."

Horses in Training 2014 Page Updated

From Brisnet

Verrazano postpones stud duty, switches to O'Brien

Verrazano stands to enhance his resume with an international turf campaign for Aidan O'Brien (David Owens/Equi-Photo)

Coolmore announced Sunday that multiple Grade 1 star Verrazano, who was slated to begin his stallion career at Ashford Stud in 2014, will instead prolong his racing career. But rather than returning to the barn of Todd Pletcher, the four-year-old has crossed the Atlantic to join trainer Aidan O'Brien in Ireland, where he will prepare to transfer his game to turf.

"Being the best son of More Than Ready, who is doing so well as a sire in Australia, we feel that a European campaign would raise his profile when the time comes for him to shuttle there," Ashford Stud Manager Dermot Ryan said in the press release.

Verrazano never took the opportunity to try turf in the United States, primarily because he was so impressive at times on dirt. A 7 3/4-length debut winner sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs at Gulfstream Park on January 1, 2013, the bay came back one month later to crush an entry-level allowance at a mile by 16 1/4 lengths. Following that rout, the Coolmore principals of Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith purchased an interest in Verrazano from Let's Go Stable.

The Tampa Bay Derby marked his first start for the new partnership, as well as his two-turn and stakes debut. Verrazano promptly galloped to a three-length decision, heightening his profile on the Kentucky Derby trail. He was more workmanlike when prevailing in the Wood Memorial, but did enough to bring a perfect four-for-four mark to Churchill Downs.

Regular rider John Velazquez opted to stick with Verrazano over Orb in the Kentucky Derby. As his old partner Orb rallied to glory, Verrazano faded to 14th of 19. Pletcher, who revealed that the colt's left hock had been struck into, believed that he was never really comfortable in the slop.

Verrazano returned with a vengeance over the summer at Monmouth, romping by 9 1/4 lengths in the Pegasus and by a record 9 3/4 lengths in the Haskell Invitational. He lost his spark thereafter, however. Only seventh in the Travers, he was fourth in his expected swan song in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita. Connections gave him another chance in the November 30 Cigar Mile, but he could do no better than fourth.

"It makes sense for Verrazano to move to Europe," Pletcher said, "as he has achieved so much already here.

"The owners love to have their best horses run at Royal Ascot, and a win there would be of great benefit to his stallion career."

Verrazano is bred to relish turf. Aside from being by More Than Ready, he is out of the Giant's Causeway mare Enchanted Rock, and a close relative of multiple Grade 2 turf vixen Hungry Island. Enchanted Rock is a half-sister to the dam of Hungry Island, who like Verrazano, is by More Than Ready.

Verrazano's half-brother, 2012 Risen Star hero El Padrino, enters stud in 2014 at Northview near Peach Bottom, Pennsylvania, for a fee of $5,000, live foal.

No fee had been set for Verrazano when he was listed on the roster of Ashford stallions.

Bred by Emory A. Hamilton in Kentucky, Verrazano was sold for $250,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. He settles into Ballydoyle with a record of 10-6-0-1, $1,691,300.

Shield justifies strong confidence

Available at around the even money mark this morning, J P McManus' Shield eventually went off at 1/2 for the Maiden and he did what was expected of him for Aidan and Joseph O'Brien.

In this two miler Shabra Charity led and tried to assert on the approach to the straight.

However  Shield was soon in pursuit and he took over from the two furlong pole.

Dalasiri and  Marty's Magic were quickly on Shield's case, but the odds-on shot found plenty for pressure to prevail by a length and a half and a neck.

O'Brien junior remarked: "He relaxes well and he travelled well into the race.

"I ended up leading a bit sooner than I wanted to though.

"He's a nice horse who should win more races and he'll pay his way."

Also bred by the O'Brien's Whisperview Trading Ltd, Shield ought to have plenty of options now as he's shown an aptitude for hurdling too. (AM & EM)
