Aidan has been named the RTÉ Sport manager of the year

Aidan’s achievement in setting a world record for top-level Group/Grade 1 wins in a calendar year was recognised on Saturday night when he won the Manager of the Year accolade at the RTE television's 2017 Sports Awards.

Aidan was one of eight nominees for the award, which was decided by a panel of editorial staff from the RTE sports department.

The award was presented to him by his son Joseph, Aidan said: "I was delighted and privileged to win the award on behalf of everyone involved at Ballydoyle."

It was a first win for racing in the category, which was introduced back in 2011. Aidan has saddled 28 Group or Grade 1 winners in 2017, he surpassed the late Bobby Frankel’s record of 25 Grade 1 wins in a season which he had taken from Aidan himself in 2003.

Having Joseph present the award to Aidan was a nice touch.

Brilliant Highland Reel wins the Hong Kong Vase and his 7th Group One Victory on his final outing

Highland Reel won his second Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin on Sunday to sign off his career in style before he heads off to stud - watch a full replay of the Group One contest below and read our report.

Highland Reel capped a memorable career by fighting off Breeders’ Cup conqueror Talismanic in the Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Ridden supremely by Ryan Moore, the six-year-old globe-trotter held off the late challenge of the French raider and Maxime Guyon by a length and three-quarters to secure his tenth career success and his seventh Group One victory in all.

After 22 individual runs abroad Highland Reel will now retire to stud, where he will stand for £17,500, and Moore paid tribute to the five-year-old immediately after the race.

“The race was smooth,” he said.

“He is a straightforward horse. We keep bringing him back here for the last three years and he has ben all around the world. It is a fitting way for him to finish. He is a brilliant racehorse and there is plenty to look forward to at stud now.”

In what has been a stellar season for Aidan O’Brien the Irish handler was posting his 28th Group One victory of the year.

He said: "He's a very special horse and is irreplaceable. It's very rare that you get a horse that can travel the world like him, it's incredible really.

"He ran a great race in America and we were very happy coming here. All the lads were really happy with him through the week and Ryan has given him a brilliant ride."

Sam Clipperton set the fractions from the front aboard local challenger Helene Charisma and Moore worked his way over to the rail slowly from stall eight to sit in the leader’s slipstream.

Coming in to the straight Moore assumed the lead and looked to be working hard at the son of Galileo and one and half furlongs out Talismanic came with what appeared to be a winning run. Highland Reel had other ideas, however, and Moore urged his mount to one final victory.

“I was always happy and always confident," Moore added.

"He’s the sort of horse once he gets into a fight, he’s almost always going to prevail. He dug in over the last furlong and I thought he was comfortable and going away at the finish.”.

“He is a very good horse, his record shows that and he has been delightful to be a part of.”

Highland Reel picked up £1,072,100.31 for his efforts and Europe's highest money earner bows put with £7,513,355 in the bank for the Coolmore syndicate.

Breeding Update

Kingfisher, runner-up in the 2014 Irish Derby and 2015 Gold Cup at Ascot, has been retired and will stand as a jumps sire at Haras du Mont Goubert in Normandy, France, where he will stand at a fee of €2,500.

Goldikova - whose glittering racing career included 14 Group 1 wins - is set to visit Galileo for the fourth time, Pierre-Yves Bureau, bloodstock representative of the Wertheimer brothers, has told Jour de Galop

Galikova, the Group 1-winning half-sister to Goldikova by Galileo, is heading to War Front for a liaison that will produce a foal bred on the same cross as this year's multiple Group 1 winners US Navy Flag and Roly Poly.

“He’s not done a great deal since his the Breeders’ Cup (Turf), but his lad Davy (Bergin) is very happy with him right now. It was probably not ideal that there were only two weeks between his run at Ascot on ground that didn’t suit and the Breeders’ Cup, but that’s the way it fell, and he needed to run at Ascot.”

Lancaster Bomber

“We were very pleased with Lancaster Bomber’s run in the Breeders’ Cup. He’s had a good season, he’s still improving and he’ll be a horse for next year,”

Roly Poly

“Roly Poly’s had a great year too, and she’s come out of her last race well. She’s small, but she’s got a big heart, a lovely pedigree, and she’s an enthusiastic racer, so we’ll see how she goes.

Deauville

"He has been freshened up after his run in Canada, where the ground didn’t suit. A good even pace here on turf that he’ll like is what he needs, and that will hopefully get him into a nice rhythm. I think the 10 furlongs is his ideal trip.”

War Decree

“War Decree found the dirt track at Del Mar all a little too much for him, but he came out of the race well, and the turf track here should be more to his liking.”

Aidan O’Brien receives the Contribution to the Industry Award at the Horse Racing Ireland Awards 2017

It’s a standing ovation for Aidan O’Brien who is awarded the Contribution To The Industry Award 2017

Aidan O'Brien was on hand to claim the Contribution to the Industry Award after breaking the worldwide record for number of Group One winners trained in a calendar year.

"I can't tell you are how grateful we are for this. It's the last thing I ever expected," said the Ballydoyle handler.

"Everybody knows our operation is a big chain, we're a small link in the chain and feel very privileged to be the link we are.

"We're always afraid to set goals because it's very rare it happens. We always take it one day at a time, one race at a time and see what happens.

"We're in a very lucky position to be working with the people that we are and with the supply of horses that we have."

Asked if he could name his favourite horse, the trainer added: " We've been lucky to have a lot of great horses. Galileo speaks for himself and when we had Istabraq we always felt we'd never get another one like him.

"He came out of the blue and he was an incredibly special horse. We always felt that no matter what he was up against, we were always confident that he was better."

Clear Skies makes it 4 on the bounce at Dundalk

It wasn't a surprise to hear Donnacha O'Brien say "she's turned into a different filly these last few runs," after his mount Clear Skies brought up a four-timer in the Irishinjuredjockeys.com Handicap at Dundalk.

Upped to a mile and half after three on the spin here over an extended ten furlongs, the beautifully bred daughter of Sea The Stars was impressive. Leading in the final quarter mile Clear Skies stayed on strongly in the final furlong for a two and three parts of a length verdict over Play It Cool.

"She loves you pulling out of her and my god was I pulling out of her for most of it," further explained O'Brien on his father Aidan's charge.

"I think getting black-type will be no problem for her and if she keeps improving like this you wouldn't know.

"There is nowhere really here for her to go from there. I don't know if they'd want to look at the Winter Derby or something but obviously I'll leave that to Dad and JP (McManus, winning owner)."
