Coolmore's Quartet of First Season Sires 2018 Spotlights
By Paul Rhodes November 30th 2017

Australia - Galileo x Ouija Board - Epsom Derby Winner

Image result for australia epsom derby

Race Career
Won 5 of his 8 career starts. Australia was a precocious juvenile, he arguably could have achieved a lot more as a juvenile but he ended his 2-year-old campaign as a Group 3 winner. He started his 3-year-old campaign by finishing a solid 3rd in the Qipco 2000 Guineas behind Multiple Group one winners Night of Thunder and Kingman. His maiden Group One victory came when he powered past Kingston Hill to claim the Epsom Derby, he followed that up by winning the Irish version, you won’t see a Classic won any easier. Went on to York to take on his elders in the Juddmonte International stakes where he put the race to bed in impressive fashion against a classy field. On the final outing of his career he was to be heartbreakingly defeated late on by The Grey Gatsby. Undoubtedly one of the classiest colts ever to be trained by Aidan O'Brien he could have achieved a lot more at 4 if he hadn’t been retired to stud at the end of his 3-year-old campaign. I am eagerly awaiting his 2-year olds to hit the track in 2018 I really can't wait.

Sales Spotlight
First crop Progeny of Australia have performed strongly at all the sales with 40 of his Yearlings selling at £100,000 or higher including 3 x half a million plus yearlings. The highest price paid at the sales for Australia's progeny was the 525,000 GNS paid for a colt out of race winner Sitara at Tattersalls Book One Sale.

Champion First Season Sire Prospects
Australia has 137 registered 2 Year Olds. He has the numbers and the class to go very close, he is bound to have some precious juveniles and some juveniles that will be big players in the back end of the season in Group One races. He in my opinion has the best chance of Coolmore's quartet of being champion first season sire we have a lot to look forward to.

War Command - War Front x Wandering Star - Dewhurst Stakes Winner

Image result for war command dewhurst stakes

Race Career
Won 4 of his 8 career starts. War Command was a Stellar juvenile and it takes a lot to really impress me but his performance in the Coventry Stakes was something to behold, it was spine-tingling really. He backed up that performance by winning the Group One Dewhurst Stakes, one of Europe's most important juvenile Group one races. Did not appear to be the same horse for his 3-year-old campaign. he was a solid 4th to Kingman in the St James Palace Stakes Group One which was his highlight of the season.

Sales Spotlight
Incredibly 129 of War Command's first crop went through the sales ring. 5 of them made over £100,000 and the highest price paid for his progeny was the 300,000-euro paid for a filly out of race placed Kingmambo mare Strawberry Fledge at Goffs Orby Yearling Sale.

Potential First Crop Stars
Filly - War Command x Strawberry Fledge
Half Sister to Group 1 Winner Cloth of Stars
Filly - War Command x Areeda
Half Sister to Group 3 Winner Great Page
Colt - War Command x Lana Girl
Half Brother to Group 3 placed Rise High
Colt - War Command x Mooching Along
Half-brother to listed placed Safari Sunseeker
Filly - War Command x Foreplay
Half Sister to Group race placed Anticipated
Colt - War Command x Gold Bubbles
Dam was Group race placed

Champion First Season Sire Prospects
War Command has 152 registered 2 Year Olds. He has serious numbers to go to war on his behalf in 2018 you just must wonder will the quality be there? There is no doubts that he will have lots of ready to run precious juveniles maybe some Royal Ascot types, he could be a dark horse in the first season sire’s championship.

Ruler Of The World - Galileo x Love Me True - Epsom Derby Winner

Image result for Ruler of the world epsom derby

Race Career
Won 4 of his 11 starts including the Group One Epsom Derby, the Group 2 Prix Foy, and the Group 3 Chester Vase. A Hugely impressive Epsom Derby winner, I liked the way he forged to the front and powered away from the field. He never really hit those heights again in his career but was a very solid horse and we look forward to his offspring.

Sales Spotlight
Only 37 of Ruler of the World's first crop went through the sales ring. Only one made over £50,000. The highest price paid for his progeny was 155,000 Euro in a Private sale at Arqana for a colt out of Cape Cross Mare Crystal Morning.

Potential First Crop Stars
Filly - Ruler Of The World x  Bold Assumption
Half Sister to Listed winner Irish Rookie
Colt - Ruler Of The World x Crystal Morning
Half Brother to race winner Furiosa
Filly - Ruler Of The World x  Ventura Ice
Half Sister to Vanturi
Colt - Ruler Of The World x Lady Miletrian
Half Brother to Group 3 placed Himalya

Champion First Season Sire Prospects
Ruler has 94 registered 2 Year Olds. A few things going against Ruler of the World as a potential champion first season sire is he was an unraced juvenile which would lead you to think he may not have too many precocious juveniles, he also he has less numbers of 2-year olds to go to war on his behalf it would be a big ask and I think some of his stablemates have better claims. He could potentially have much better 3-year olds though and could well make a move as a second season sire.

No Nay Never - Scat Daddy x Cat's Eyes Whiteness - Prix Morny Winner

Image result for no nay never ascot

Race Career
He was lightening quick as a juvenile and proved to be an all-round solid sprinter. No Nay Never was the Winner of 4 of his 6 career starts including the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville both coming in his juvenile campaign. At three he added the Woodford presented by Keeneland Select Stakes (Grade 3). On the final start of his career he finished a fine runner up in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint behind Bobby's Kitten to round off a fine career.

Sales Spotlight
No Nay Never was the strongest performer of Coolmore's 4 first season sires. 103 of his first crop went through the ring all over the world an incredible 24 lots made £100,000 plus. His most expensive offspring was sold at Tattersalls Book One a colt out of High Chaparral mare Muravka who was sold to Japanese buyers for £850,000

Potential First Crop Stars
Colt - No Nay Never x Dancing Shoes
Half Brother to Galileo race winners Gypsy King & Let's Twist Again.
Colt - No Nay Never x Chaibia
Dam Group 3 winning daughter of Peintre Celebre.
Colt - No Nay Never x Theann
Half Brother to multiple Group One Winner Photo Call
Colt - No Nay Never x Fancy
The Dam has Galileo & Danehill Dancer in her pedigree
Colt - No Nay Never x Muravka
Half Brother to Group One Winner The Wow Signal
Filly - No Nay Never x Hureya
Half Sister to Group 3 Winner Muthabara

Champion First Season Sire Prospects
No Nay Never Has 170 registered 2 Year Olds for 2018 more than his three Coolmore rivals. He also has quality offspring to back up the numbers. Bound to have plenty of early runners and could build up an unassailable lead as Zoffany did 3 seasons ago. A huge player in the first season sires title and could well win the title.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round UP

I Think Coolmore have a stronger hand in 2018 in which to go to war with. Declaration of War & Camelot did them proud in 2017 but I think Australia and No Nay Never could have an almighty battle for the title. My heart says Australia, my head says No Nay Never. I'm just looking forward to the battle it's game on.
